"GIRL GUIDES" Pre-1968 Interest Badges

I am indebted to Marion Wynn,
County Commissioner and County Badge Secretary, Shropshire Guides,
for the information on this page and many of the pictures of badges in this section.

Many thanks, Marion.

As far as I know, there were four different designs for badges prior to 1968.
If you know differently, please let me know.

1910 - 1921

Guide badges were dark blue on white
(except for 'Sick Nurse' which was white on red)
and were not bound around the edge.

Red borders indicated Senior Guides (later Rangers).

1921 - 1930

Guide badges were sage green on black.
They still carried no words.
Badges were not bound around the edge, so some girls buttonholed their badges.

1930 - 1936 and 1936 - 1968

In 1930 'GIRL GUIDES' appeared on the badges.
Badges were not bound and again were often buttonholed by the girls.

In 1936 badges were bound around the edge.
As far as I know this is the only difference between the badges of these two periods.

The main difference between these and the post-1968 badges was the size.
Prior to 1968 the badges were generally about 40-44 mm (about 1.6" to 1.7")
in diameter, although many about today have shrunk a little,
presumably having been washed whilst sewn onto a uniform.
Post-1968 badges were somewhat smaller being about 35-36 mm (about 1.4")
in diameter.
